Meeting of the Society - March 19, 2006
The Randolph Caldecott Society of America recently held its Annual General Meeting/Caldecott Birthday Celebration at the Main Branch Library. The purpose of the society is to bring together those people who are dedicated to the remembrance, appreciation, and promotion of the art of Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886), nineteenth-century English illustrator, artist, and sculptor. Caldecott is buried in St. Augustine's Evergreen Cemetery where a Literary Landmark plaque was placed on his grave in March of 2005. Several people were recognized, at this meeting, for their outstanding participation and assistance with the ceremony: Mary Jane Little, Director, St. Johns County Library System and RCSA member; Valerie Peischel, Main Branch Manager; Suzanne Batovsky, Main Friends of the Library; Wynema Gatewood, ceremony co-chair and RCSA member; Art Boccieri, RCSA Founding Member and current RCSA Vice President; Anne Boccieri, RCSA Founding Member, Linda Ginn, RCSA; and Allan Reichert, RCSA Founding Member and current RCSA Treasurer.
The American Library Association announced the 2006 Caldecott Medal winning books in January 2006. These books were on display at the RCSA meeting and will be purchased by RCSA for the "Randolph Caldecott Children's Room" at the Main Library. The medals will be awarded to winning book illustrators at the ALA annual summer conference. These awards are given annually to the artists of the "most distinguished" American Picture Book for Children. Chris Raschka, illustrator of The Hello, Goodbye Window will receive the 2006 Caldecott Medal. ALA announced three 2006 Caldecott Honor Books: Rosa, illustrated by Bryan Collier; Zen Shorts illustrated by Jon J. Muth; Hot Air; The (Mostly) True Story Of The First Hot-Air Balloon Ride, illustrated by Marjorie Priceman; and Song Of The Water Boatman And Other Pond Poems, illustrated by Beckie Prange.
The meeting program, "Come Lasses and Lads: A Goody Two-Shoes Tells How Randolph Caldecott and John Newbery Became Important To A Farmer's Girl" was presented by author Claudette Hegel from near Bloomington, Minnesota. Ms. Hegel discussed her interest in Caldecott and Newbery through the similarities among these men with her own life and background. She is the proud owner of all 650 of the Caldecott and Newbery Medal winning books. Hegel has about 150 published articles and stories, plus five books, which includes Randolph Caldecott: An Illustrated Life. Her upcoming book, soon to be released, will be a biography of John Newbery.

RCSA voted to continue their financial support of a joint Art Award with the First Coast Pilot Club of St. Augustine given annually to a deserving local high school art student.

The society recently provided the City of St. Augustine with four newly designed RCSA signs to be displayed on the City's community boards at the four entrances to the City.

RCSA has placed a spring floral arrangement on the Caldecott grave in Evergreen Cemetery.

Refreshments for the social time prior to the meeting and other meeting arrangements were conducted by: Linda Ginn, Wynema Gatewood, Dot Taylor, Beryl Rogers, and Gwen and Allan Reichert.
